How to Paint a Garden Bench or Outdoor Chair

In Furniture Makeover Ideas and Guides 0 comments

A painted garden bench or outdoor chair can completely transform an outdoor space — and it's one of the most satisfying weekend projects you can do. The right colour on a timber garden bench makes it a feature of the garden rather than just a functional object. And with the right paint and prep, the finish will hold up to Australian outdoor conditions for years.

The Most Important Rule: Use the Right Paint

Outdoor furniture needs outdoor-appropriate paint. Chalk finish paint is formulated for interior use and will fade and deteriorate quickly outdoors without significant protection. For garden benches and outdoor chairs, we always recommend Artisan Mineral Paint.

Artisan Mineral Paint has built-in UV protection, is water-resistant and dries to a durable eggshell finish that handles Australian outdoor conditions far better than chalk finish paint. It's the only paint in our range we'd confidently recommend for outdoor use without a separate UV topcoat — though adding one extends the life of the finish further.

Best Colours for Garden Benches and Outdoor Chairs

Garden furniture suits colours that complement the garden rather than compete with it. Our favourite Artisan Mineral Paint colours for outdoor furniture:

  • Cotton — crisp white. A white garden bench is a classic that never dates. Beautiful against green garden foliage.
  • Gumleaf — muted Australian green. Blends beautifully with a garden setting while still being a considered colour choice.
  • Hampton Blue — classic coastal blue. Beautiful in a coastal garden or on a verandah.
  • Regatta — deep navy. Bold and striking in a garden setting.
  • Natural Linen — warm neutral. Suits a relaxed, organic garden aesthetic.
  • Iron Gate — deep grey. Sophisticated and suits almost any garden style.
  • Stringy Bark — warm earthy tan. Suits a native Australian garden beautifully.

Prep: The Key to Outdoor Durability

Outdoor furniture prep is more important than indoor prep because the finish needs to withstand far more stress. Don't rush this.

Clean Thoroughly

Outdoor furniture accumulates mould, mildew, bird droppings, lichen and general weathering. Scrub with a stiff brush and sugar soap solution, rinse well and allow to dry completely — ideally 24–48 hours in the sun. Any moisture trapped under the paint will cause bubbling and peeling.

Sand Back Loose or Peeling Paint

If the existing finish is peeling or flaking, sand it back until you have a stable surface. Painting over unstable existing paint is the most common reason outdoor paint jobs fail quickly.

Treat Any Rust (Metal Furniture)

For metal garden furniture, sand back any rust with 80–120 grit sandpaper until you reach clean metal, then apply a rust-inhibiting primer before painting.

Scuff Sand Smooth Surfaces

Lightly scuff sand smooth or glossy surfaces with 180 grit to give the paint something to grip. Wipe away all dust.

Step-by-Step: Painting a Garden Bench

  1. Clean thoroughly; allow to dry completely (24–48 hours)
  2. Sand back any loose or peeling existing finish
  3. Scuff sand smooth surfaces with 180 grit; wipe away dust
  4. Apply first coat of Artisan Mineral Paint
  5. Allow to dry (1–2 hours)
  6. Lightly sand with 220 grit; wipe away dust
  7. Apply second coat
  8. Allow to dry fully (24 hours)
  9. Apply UV-resistant topcoat for maximum outdoor durability (optional but recommended)

Maintaining Painted Outdoor Furniture

Even the best outdoor paint job benefits from some maintenance. Clean regularly with a damp cloth to remove dirt and mildew before it builds up. Inspect annually and touch up any chips or worn areas before they spread. Store cushions indoors when not in use.

A well-maintained painted garden bench can look great for 3–5 years before needing a full repaint. And repainting is much easier the second time around — a light sand and two fresh coats is usually all you need.
