How to Paint Children's Furniture Safely

In Furniture Makeover Ideas and Guides 0 comments

Painting children's furniture is one of the most rewarding projects you can do — a painted cot, bookcase or toy chest can become a piece a child grows up with and remembers. But when it comes to children's furniture, paint safety matters more than anywhere else. Children touch, mouth and spend hours in contact with their furniture in a way adults don't.

Here's what you need to know to paint children's furniture safely in Australia.

The Most Important Thing: Use Low-VOC, Water-Based Paint

VOCs (volatile organic compounds) are the chemicals in paint that off-gas as the paint dries and cures. High-VOC paints — particularly oil-based paints — can off-gas for weeks or months after application, which is a genuine concern in a child's bedroom or nursery.

Artisan Chalk Finish Paint and Artisan Mineral Paint are both water-based and low-VOC. They're safe to use in children's rooms and off-gas quickly after application. We use them for all children's furniture projects without hesitation.

Avoid oil-based paints, solvent-based primers and high-VOC products on any furniture that will be used by children.

Check for Lead Paint on Older Pieces

If you're repainting an older piece of furniture — particularly anything made before 1970 — test for lead paint before sanding or stripping. Lead paint test kits are available at most hardware stores in Australia. If the piece tests positive for lead, don't sand it — consult a professional for safe removal.

Allow Full Cure Time Before Use

Water-based paint feels dry to touch within hours but takes 7–14 days to fully cure. During this curing period, the paint is more susceptible to marking and damage. For children's furniture, allow the full cure time before putting the piece into use — especially for cots and pieces that will be mouthed or chewed.

Choose the Right Paint for the Piece

Artisan Mineral Paint is our recommendation for most children's furniture. It's more durable than chalk finish paint, water-resistant and washable — essential for furniture that will be wiped down regularly with cleaning products. The eggshell finish also holds up better to the daily handling children's furniture receives.

Artisan Chalk Finish Paint is suitable for decorative children's pieces that get lighter use — a bookcase, a toy chest, a decorative chair. Always seal chalk finish paint on children's furniture with a durable water-based sealer rather than wax, as wax is not washable.

Best Colours for Children's Furniture

Children's furniture is a great place to be playful with colour. From the Artisan range:

For Nurseries

  • Rosé (chalk) — soft, warm blush pink. Beautiful in a nursery.
  • Lavender Field (chalk) — soft muted lavender. Calm and gentle.
  • Duck Egg (chalk) — soft blue-green. Suits both boys' and girls' nurseries.
  • Parchment (chalk) — warm cream. Timeless and versatile.
  • Sage (chalk) — soft green. Nature-connected and calming.

For Older Children's Rooms

  • Hampton Blue (mineral) — fresh, classic blue. Suits boys' rooms beautifully.
  • Peacock (chalk) — rich teal. Bold and playful.
  • Go Bananas (chalk) — warm yellow. Cheerful and energetic.
  • Coral (chalk) — warm coral pink. Suits older girls' rooms.
  • Charcoal (chalk) — for older children who want something more grown-up.

Sealing Children's Furniture

All children's furniture should be sealed with a durable, water-based sealer — not wax. Wax is not washable and won't hold up to the cleaning that children's furniture requires. A water-based matte or satin sealer is the right choice — it's durable, washable and safe once fully cured.

Apply 2 coats of sealer, sanding lightly with 400 grit between coats. Allow to cure fully before the piece goes into use.

Ventilation During Painting

Even with low-VOC water-based paint, always paint in a well-ventilated space and allow the piece to off-gas fully before bringing it into a child's room. Painting outdoors or in a garage with the doors open is ideal. Don't paint in a child's room with the child present.
